Why would agriculture agency offer a jail loan?

When we heard that a regional jail was being built by the Nisqually Tribe on Yelm Highway near state Route 510 we were shocked. We have so many questions about how this could happen in our neighborhood without our knowledge on land that until just recently was Fort Lewis property.

However, our biggest question is why in the world would the United States Department of Agriculture help finance this project with a $11,585,000 loan?

We support the USDA and appreciate how the agency has assisted rural communities by providing funding for needed community facilities.

We do not support or appreciate why they would fund a regional jail for the Nisqually Indian Tribe when our county has a regional jail only 10 miles away that our county is currently trying to open and staff.
