Early learning programs pay huge dividends

As a sheriff, I was very happy to read in The Olympian that Washington state is well-positioned to receive a federal “early learning challenge” grant, which will help build up infrastructure for early childhood development in our state.

These new funds will help improve the quality of early learning and make sure that kids are ready for kindergarten. Dedicating more resources to early learning for at-risk kids will also lead to safer communities.

That’s why law enforcement leaders in Thurston County and throughout the state and nation support additional investments in proven programs for children from birth to age 5.

Research has proven that when children at the highest risk of school failure participate in high-quality early learning programs, they are far less likely to commit serious crimes as juveniles and adults. Investing in high-quality early childhood education also saves far more than it costs because it saves taxpayers money on expenses like remedial education and ultimately crime costs.

Kudos and good luck to the Department of Early Learning for a successful early learning challenge application.
