Three to see: Week 1

• Published September 02, 2011

The 2011 season kicked off Thursday night at Ingersoll Stadium with O'Dea scoring 21 unanswered points to defeat Capital, 28-14.. The bulk of area teams begin their seasons Friday night. With that said, it's time to bring back the ever-popular Three to see, and give the lowdown on three of the area's top games to see each week.

Here's the Three to See: Week 1

Olympia (0-0) at Tumwater (0-0), 7 tonight, Tumwater District Stadium

The lowdown: Tumwater, the defending 2A state champions, hosts the old rivalry game, and looks to use the home-field advantage to avenge last season’s 27-21 overtime loss to the Bears at Ingersoll Stadium. That loss in Week 1 proved to be the T-Birds’ only loss of 2010 as they reeled off 12 straight victories to claim the 2A state title. Tumwater features 10 all-league players from last season’s 12-1 team, led offensively by senior quarterback Daniel Hinkle, who threw for 1,400 yards and 23 TDs in 2010. Olympia looks to make up its lack of size with its speed and strength. The Bears have strong core of experience with 13 returning starters, including senior running back Spenser Killman, an all-4A Narrows League performer with 1,115 yards rushing and 21 TDs last season. Defense is strength of both teams, but the offenses could also put up big yardage on the ground and in the air.

Timberline (0-0) at Camas (0-0), 7 tonight, Doc Harris Stadium (Camas)

The lowdown: If you can make the trek two hours down Interstate 5, this matchup is worth seeing in-person. Camas is 3-1 all-time against Timberline, including a 29-14 victory over the Blazers at last year’s Emerald City Kickoff Classic. Last year was the teams’ first meeting since 1974 – the days of the old Black Hills League. The Papermakers will rely heavily on a ground attack, led by senior Zack Marshall, who was second in the Greater St. Helens League in rushing last season, and its defense, which allowed 11.3 points per game in 12 games.. Timberline is loaded with returning experience, and will bolster its running game with junior Spencer Crump, who took over the starting nod in Week 5 and went onto earn first-team all-3A Narrows League honors. James Segura-Mitchell takes over at quarterback after being a receiver in 2010.

North Thurston (0-0) at Shelton (0-0), 7 tonight, Highclimber Stadium

The lowdown: Despite only having a small class of senior players – eight – there’s no shortage of talent for North Thurston. Expect the Rams to throw the ball more with senior quarterback Ben Broeker and a strong core of senior receivers, led by Landon Rushton and Matt Reid. The offensive line is young, and features 6-foot-6, 290-pound sophomore Alex Rice, who is playing his season of football. Shelton, with 14 returning starters, looks to get off to a good start in 2011 after last year’s 49-28 loss to the Rams at South Sound Stadium. Look for the Highclimbers to be a surprise team when they begin 4A Narrows League play Sept. 16. Coach Matt Hinkle is switching to a 3-5 defense to attack the trend of spread offenses they’ll face this season. Linebacker Thomas Gettle led the team with 68 tackles and three interceptions in 2010.
