Saint Martin's, Evergreen fall sports weekend roundup (Sept. 3)

• Published September 03, 2011

It was a busy weekend opening weekend for fall sports at Saint Martin's and Evergreen, led by Saint Martin's men's cross country team capturing the team title at the Puget Sound Invitational Saturday afternoon.

SAINT MARTIN’S
Cross country: The Saints won the men’s team title with 26 points at the four-team invitational at Fort Steilacoom Park, hosted by the University of Puget Sound on Saturday. Seniors Spencer Hunt (25:26) and Kyle Van Santen (25:27) finished first and second, respectively in the men’s 8K race. Joe Berger (27:02) and Joseph Patti (27:22) finished fifth and sixth. For the women, junior Joscelyn Minton took the lead at the two-mile mark and pulled away with a winning time of 24:02 in the women’s 6K race. Erika Copeland (25:14) finished eighth to round out the top-10 placers. “We had some great performances today,” Saints coach Julie Sullivan said. “Joscelyn, Spencer and Kyle all looked easy today, and our guys all packed well to take the team title. We had some nervous freshman out there before the race who all ran with determination and heart, and it was great to see.”

Men’s soccer: The Saints, champions of the GNAC in 2009, got off to a rough start Thursday, dropping its season opener to Cal State LA, 6-0, but rebounded Saturday with a 1-0 victory over UC San Diego in La Jolla, Calif. Austin Kelley scored the game's only goal off a rebound from a deflection by UC San Diego goalkeeper Josh Cohen in the 83rd minute for the Saints' first win.

Women’s soccer: SMU dropped its first two games to begin the 2011 season over the weekend. The Saints fell to Cal State LA, 2-0, Thursday afternoon, followed by a 1-0 defeat to Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday.

Volleyball: The Saints went 1-3 at the Humboldt State Invitational, which ended Saturday in Arcada, Calif. SMU freshman Kristyn Ross, a 2011 Capital graduate, led the way offensively for the Saints. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter posted a match-high 24 kills in the Saints’ 3-2 win over Notre Dame de Namur in Friday’s first match, followed by 24 kills against Academy of Arts in a 3-2 loss Saturday.

EVERGREEN

Women’s soccer: The Geoducks earned their first win in nearly two years Friday night, earning a 1-0 non-league victory over Lewis and Clark College in Portland. Evergreen (1-2) scored its goal in the ninth minute from Brianna Speed, which was her second goal of the year. The victory came after Thursday’s 2-1 non-league loss to Pacific University.

Men’s soccer: The Geoducks, in their first game since Aug. 19, were shutout for the second time, falling 3-0 to No. 20-ranked University of Great Falls on Saturday. Evergreen fell to 0-2 on the season and still looking to score its first goal.

Volleyball: With just six healthy players on the two-match road trip to Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho, Evergreen was swept, 3-0, in both matches Friday and Saturday night. The Geoducks fell, 25-4, 25-5, 25-10 against Eastern Oregon and 25-9, 25-6, 25-13 to No. 10-ranked and CCC favorite College of Idaho. Evergreen is now 0-2 on the season.
