MEN’S SOCCER

Coach: John Purtteman (sixth season)

2010: 4-10-3 overall, 4-8-2 Cascade Collegiate Conference (tie sixth)

Key returners: D Corey Johnson, 6-0, sr.; GK Christian Pettit, 6-2, soph.; D Kodey Eley, 5-8, soph.; F Brice Boum, 6-2, jr.; D Chris Miller, 5-9, sr.; M George Bundy, 5-6, jr.; D Kyle Wiese, 5-6, jr.

Outlook: Evergreen boosts a big returning offensive load with 15 of the 18 goal-scorers back from a 4-10-3 squad last season. Johnson, a second-team all-conference selection from Longview, accounted for five goals, two assists, and a team-high 22 shots. Twelve of the team’s 18 matches last season were tied or decided by one goal. The Geoducks lost to No. 20-ranked University of Great Falls, 3-0, on Saturday to fall to 0-2 on the 2011 season.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Coach: Adam Fenster (second season)

2010: 0-12-1

Key returners: M/F Brianna Speed, 5-8, sr.; F Katie Mendoza, 5-6, soph.; F Leah Aragon, 5-2, jr.; D Kori Lerch, 5-5, soph.; M Sophie Krauza, 5-5, soph.; D Hannah North, 5-4, soph.

Outlook: The Geoducks have nowhere to go but up after a winless 2010 campaign in Fenster’s inaugural season as coach at his alma mater. Evergreen won its first game in nearly two years, edging Lewis and Clark, 1-0, in a nonleague game in Portland on Friday. Eight starters return, including Mendoza (two goals) and Speed (two assists), who contributed to the Geoducks’ scoring last season. Speed already has two goals on the season, including the team’s lone goal against Lewis and Clark.

VOLLEYBALL

Coach: Greg Spector (first season)

2010: 5-17 overall, 4-14 CCC (tie sixth)

Key returners: L Chantal Petkus, 5-5, sr.; MB Jasmine Horton, 6-1, sr.; S Erin Mitchell, 5-4, soph.; OH Stephanie Peshlakai-John, 5-7, jr.

Outlook: The Geoducks’ lineup will be bolstered by Petkus, who led the conference in digs per set (5.77) last season. The team has just nine players for new coach Spector, who is the program’s third coach in three years. Evergreen, which only had six healthy players this past weekend, was swept 3-0 in its first two matches of the season against Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho.

CROSS COUNTRY

Coach: Malcolm Dunn (first season)

2010: Men – 10th at CCC Championships; women – ninth at CCC Championships

Key returners: Men – Connor Abdelnoor, jr. Women – Karissa Carlson, sr.; Britta Peterson, sr.

Outlook: The Geoducks’ biggest change is at the helm, where Dunn takes over after leading the Whitman women to a 25th-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Division III championships. The men’s team is full of youth with seven freshmen and look to gain big strides following last year’s 10th-place finish at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships. On the women’s side, Carlson had Evergreen’s highest finish at the conference championships (43rd). During last indoor track and field season, she placed 10th in the 800-meter run.
