Evergreen's women's soccer team earns CCC weekly honor

• Published September 07, 2011

After winning their first game in nearly two years, The Evergreen State College's women's soccer team earned the Cascade Collegiate Conference's Verizon Team of the Week honor, announced Wednesday.

Last Friday, the Geoducks (1-2) defeated NCAA Div. III Lewis and Clark, 1-0, in Portland on Brianna Speed's goal in the ninth minute. Evergreen GK Lauren Davidson picked up her first shutout.

The 1-0 victory over the Pioneers was Evergreen's first win since since defeating George Fox, 1-0, on Sept. 13, 2009 and was the first road victory since Oct. 2, 2008 when Evergreen defeated the now-defunct Cascade College, 1-0.

“We were all thrilled with the win,” second-year coach Adam Fenster said in a release. “It’s a stat we’ve wanted to change for a long time, and for it to come under the lights, on the road and after our 2-1 loss to Pacific the night before felt good. It’s nice to see how far we’ve come in the last year. I know the girls were pleased with their performance and hope to put more games like that together this year.

Evergreen hosts George Fox at 3 p.m. Friday.
