Three to see: Week 2

• Published September 09, 2011

Olympia (1-0) at Capital (0-1), 7:30 tonight, Ingersoll Stadium

Two teams, one big rivalry game for this 35th edition of the Spaghetti Bowl. As always, a packed house is expected for the annual game. Capital leads the all-time series, 19-15, and snapped Olympia’s five-game win streak in the series with last year’s 49-28 win over the Bears. But both Capital and Olympia come into tonight’s game with different Week 1 results. Olympia cruised to a 34-7 victory over 2A Tumwater, while Capital lost to third-ranked O’Dea, 28-14. Bears QB Trevor had a monster game against the T-Birds, completing 12-of-26 passes for 178 yards and four touchdowns (three throwing, one rushing). Olympia got a big spark from RB Casey Bond when Spenser Killman went down early with a shoulder injury, and could see a lot of carries against the Cougars. Capital has a lot of new faces from last year’s 3A state semifinal team, but hung with O’Dea for much of last Friday’s game. A lot of the offense will go through RB Kai Van Sickle, who rushed for 106 yards on 21 carries against the Irish.

Timberline (0-1) at North Thurston (1-0), 7 tonight, South Sound Stadium

The Lacey Showdown comes with some questions for each team – how will the Blazers bounce back following last week’s 20-6 loss to Camas and can they slowdown North Thurston’s high-powered offense? For North Thurston, can its offense keep the momentum going against a Timberline defense that didn’t surrender an offense touchdown in Week 1? The 69 points the Rams put up in last Friday’s 69-6 win over Shelton was a school record. QB Ben Broeker was 6-for-10 for 206 yards and four touchdowns, and didn’t play in the second half. Spencer Crump scored Timberline’s only touchdown against the Papermakers, and held them to two field goals and got two touchdowns via fumble returns. Tonight is the 41st consecutive year the two teams have met and have played each other at least once per season since 1970 – the year Timberline opened – making it the longest continuous rivalry in Thurston County. North Thurston leads the all-time 26-20, including last year’s 41-28 victory – but Timberline has won six of the past eight meetings.

Shelton (0-1) at Black Hills (0-1), 7 tonight, Tumwater District Stadium

Both teams had offensive struggles in Week 1, and both look to pull out a confidence-boosting victory tonight. It’s been an emotional week for the Highclimbers, who lost their football gear and equipment from an early-morning arson fire on Sunday, but none of their game-day gear was destroyed. The fire came less than 48 hours following a tough 69-6 loss to 2A North Thurston at home, and struggled stopping the Rams’ passing and rushing attack.
Black Hills’ offense wasn’t on the field much in last week’s 60-7 loss to 1A Montesano, only running 38 total plays and had trouble stopping the Bulldogs’ offense. Cameron Stone scored the Wolves’ touchdown on an 8-yard run early in the fourth quarter in his first start in the backfield. Last year, these two teams had an offensive slugfest with Shelton coming away with a 41-40 victory.
