Three South Sound Indian tribes will receive $3.6 million in federal funds to improve domestic violence programs.

U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan announced Wednesday that the Puyallup, Nisqually and Squaxin Island tribes are among 10 Washington tribes sharing $11 million in Department of Justice grants, awarded based on the needs of each group.

In addition to domestic violence programs, the funds sent to Washington tribes are intended to be spent on methamphetamine enforcement, training and equipment, tribal youth programs, and facilities for tribal courts and jails.

The Puyallup Tribe will get $1.9 million; the Nisquallies $500,000 and the Squaxin Island Tribe $1.2 million.

The Puyallups’ grant was the largest in the state.
