Elect those who favor lake over estuary

As an elected official, I would not normally urge voters to cast their ballots based on one issue. However, this election, like the 2009 election for the Olympia City Council, implicates the raison d’etre for our state capital city, the historic 100-year-old State Capitol Campus plan.

Two years ago, the issue was the view corridor from the Law Enforcement Memorial and the north campus trail to the borrowed landscapes of Puget Sound and the Olympics. This year the issue is preserving and improving the reflecting Capitol Lake.

It is surprising that candidates for the City Council would take positions on these issues that would destroy the nationally significant campus, which happens to be our greatest tourist attraction and the economic engine of our community.

The voters succeeded in electing a council in 2009 that now unanimously supports the view corridor. This year, all voters should ask candidates whether they support cleaning up and saving the lake and vote only for those who say “yes.”

Our state legislators and officials who have successfully obtained funds to restart dredging the lake will thank you, as will all citizens who treasure the most beautiful Capitol Campus in the world.
