Port of Olympia Commissioner Jeff Davis has announced that he is a Democratic candidate for state representative in the 35th legislative district.

The seat currently is held by Fred Finn, although Finn has indicated that he will not seek re-election next year.

Davis, 43, who lives in rural Thurston County and works as a longshoreman at the Port of Longview and other Western Washington ports, said he will remain a Port of Olympia commissioner through his campaign.

"If I do get elected, I'll look at the lay of the land at that time," Davis said. He has served on the port commission, representing the 3rd district, for nearly two years, he said.

The 35th legislative district encompasses part of west Olympia, as well as west to part of Grays Harbor County and north to Bremerton, Davis said.

"We know these are challenging and uncertain economic times for all of us," he said in a statement released to the media. "We must work together to come up with solutions on how to put people back to work in our state."
