A DuPont police sergeant has been placed on administrative leave after he was arrested last weekend on suspicion of drunken driving.

Washington State Patrol cited the 43-year-old sergeant after he allegedly hit a parked, unoccupied car in the City of DuPont.

DuPont Police Chief Ron Goodpaster said Friday that the sergeant, a 12-year member of the DuPont police force, is on paid leave. He’s waiting for reports on the incident from the State Patrol before determining the next steps in the internal review process.

The sergeant was arrested about 2:30 a.m. Sept. 17 after a traffic accident on McNeil Street near Ridge View Drive, DuPont police and the Washington State Patrol reported. He was in his personal car and off duty, Goodpaster said.

DuPont police asked State Patrol troopers to investigate the crash.

Troopers contacted the sergeant at the scene and suspected he was intoxicated, trooper Guy Gill said. He was arrested without incident, cited on suspicion of DUI and released, Gill said.

“He was very polite and cooperative,” he said.

Gill added that the situation was tough.

“It’s a sad scenario,” he said. “He’s a human and can make a mistake just like everybody else.”
