Not J.D. Johnson, the Capital High coach.
With Kai Van Sickle sidelined because of a concussion, Johnson unleashed Connor Kennedy and Ryan Rieta, who paced the Cougars’ 237-yard effort on the ground in a 27-7 victory over Enumclaw on Friday night at Ingersoll Stadium.
“I’ve got all the faith in the world in these two kids,” Johnson said.
Protecting a 6-0 lead, Capital scored right before halftime when linebacker Darius Antalan jumped in front of an Enumclaw receiver, grabbed the pass with one hand and returned the interception 15 yards for a touchdown.
“That kind of gave us a shot of momentum,” Johnson said.
Olympia 21, at Central Kitsap 14: Senior running back Spenser Killman, in his first game back from suffering a shoulder injury in Week 1 against Tumwater, rushed for two of Olympia’s three touchdowns as the Bears improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the 4A Narrows League.
It was nice to see him out there running, Olympia coach Bill Beattie said.
Dylan Reed had a 57-yard TD catch from quarterback Trevor Houser with 6:28 left in the third quarter to give Olympia a 21-7 lead.
Beattie praised the play of his team's defense.
Our defense played one heck of a game, Beattie said. Thats a very good football team with a lot of speed.
At South Kitsap 38, Shelton 7: The Shelton Highclimbers have surrendered their share of big plays, but one might have been the most astounding in a Narrows 4A loss in Port Orchard.
Facing a fourth-and-30 play with 30 seconds to go in the first half, South Kitsap ran a hook-and-ladder play – and it worked. Eddie Mesiner completed a short pass to Aaron La Deaux, who then handed the ball off to a streaking Dominic Boddie for a 79-yard score to give the Wolves a 28-0 lead.
Tenino 20, at Elma 7: Darrin Love’s 71-yard touchdown scamper midway through the fourth quarter sealed Tenino’s Southwest Washington 1A victory over the host Eagles.
Elma had three chances to score in the red zone through three quarters but was shut out until a late touchdown.
Centralia 14, at R.A. Long 6: A fourth-down pass by the Lumberjacks in Centralia territory with 23 seconds to go fell incomplete, and the Tigers escaped with a nonleague road victory in Longview.
All of the Tigers’ points came in the first half – on short touchdown runs by Mason Musselman. His second one, an 8-yarder, put Centralia up 14-0 with 8:10 left in the half.
At Chehalis 32, Aberdeen 0: Mitch Gueller threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran 80 yards for another score during a seven-minute stretch of the third quarter to give Chehalis a 25-0 lead.
Rainier 49, at Onalaska 0: Dalton Delio threw for two scores and ran for another, and the Mountaineers’ defense forced four turnovers in a road victory.
