A 4-month-old who was on life support with head injuries – believed to be caused by his mother – died just after 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Mary Bridge Hospital in Tacoma, according to Thurston County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ken Clark.

The boy’s mother, Rachel Bryan, 20, of Centralia, is being held in Thurston County Jail on suspicion of second-degree assault of a child.

Her bail was set at $500,000 on Thursday.

“One would make an assumption that they’ll evaluate the original charges with this new information,” Clark said.

Bryan was arrested in the 20000 block of Grand Mound Way, where medical personnel found the infant unresponsive.

“The incident actually occurred where they were visiting friends in Grand Mound,” Clark said.

According to court papers, Bryan told a sheriff’s detective that she had been frustrated because her son wouldn’t stop crying and that she was “very rough with him.”

Her mother told officials that Bryan was diagnosed with mental problems when she was 15 or 16.
