The man was treated and released from Providence St. Peter Hospital that evening and is now working with detectives to piece together what happened, said Lt. Phil Comstock.
The man told authorities that he arrived at his residence in the 5000 block of College Street about 7:30 p.m. to find a man in his apartment. After getting into a physical altercation with the alleged suspect, the man went to his bedroom to grab a firearm.
The altercation continued and the gun was turned in the man’s direction and one shot was fired into the side of his abdomen, Comstock said.
“The homeowner states that he fired the weapon and it struck himself,” Comstock said.
The suspect fled and the gunshot victim called 911, Comstock said.
The case is being investigated as a burglary, Comstock said.
The resident described the intruder as a man wearing dark clothing, including a ski mask and gloves.
Detectives were expected to return to the scene today to speak more with the victim, Comstock said.
