Washington State Cougars' opponent this week: Stanford

October 11, 2011

4:30 p.m., Martin Stadium, Pullman

TV: Versus Radio: 1240-AM, 770-AM, 104.3-FM

Coach: David Shaw (5-0, first year)

Last week: Defeated Colorado, 48-7.

Against the Cougars: Stanford leads, 35-25-1. Stanford won last year, 38-28, in Palo Alto, Calif.

Washington connections: Former Bellevue High School star David DeCastro starts at offensive guard for the Cardinal. Geoff Meinken, a Lynnwood High product who originally gave a verbal commitment to WSU, is the No. 2 fullback. Charlie Hopkins, a freshman defensive end from Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, is expected to redshirt. Former Clover Park High and Stanford quarterback Tavita Pritchard is a defensive assistant coach. Defensive line coach Randy Hart was a longtime assistant at Washington.

Scouting report: The Cardinal and Luck haven’t skipped a beat since Shaw was promoted from offensive coordinator after Jim Harbaugh left for the San Francisco 49ers’ head coaching job in the NFL. Stanford ranks among the nation’s best on offense (46.2 points and 487.8 yards per game) and defense (10.6 points and 302.4 yards). The Cardinal leads rivals 17-2 in quarterback sacks, holds a 48-26 percent edge in third-down conversions and has a 100-57 percent edge in red zone scoring. The season-ending knee injury suffered Sept. 17 by middle linebacker Shayne Skov may take a toll eventually, but the Cardinal has uncommon depth, size and balance.

Did you know? Shaw occasionally lets Heisman Trophy candidate Andrew Luck call his own plays, which is basically unheard of in modern-day college football.
