Give school contract staff a break

School employees are contract employees and at the mercy of the state and school district.

I was contracted for 180 days. When the state reduced the pay of state employees by having furlough days, they didn’t have to make up those days. In the case of school contract staff, our pay was reduced by the equivalent of three school days because of the budget but we are still teaching/working the same number of days.

If a state employee has a snow day, they are paid for that day. If you are school staff, you aren’t paid for full snow days. Those days are added on to the end of the school year or whenever the school board/district decide.

If OSPI forgives snow days, school contract employees are required to make up the hours missed or have their pay reduced. For partial snow days, the school contract teachers get credit for a full day.

Nonteacher employees have to make up the hours they miss on a curtailed school day.

Yes, I know there are jobs where you don’t get paid for snow days. But federal and state employees don’t have to make up that time.

Finally, if a state employee works overtime, they are paid. The only reason school staff is paid 12 months out of the year is so we won’t file for unemployment when our contract days are done.
