Time to celebrate school lunches

In honor of National School Lunch Week, I’ve asked my kids to buy hot lunch this week. Well, that and I didn’t make it to the grocery store on Sunday to pick up lunch supplies.

To help curb costs, we used to let each child choose four hot lunches a month, and mark their choices on the calendar ahead of time. But now that I’m back at work, and often rushing around in the morning, we’ve relaxed that rule quite a bit.

Besides, our kids are picky eaters, and I’ve learned that school lunches have forced them to try new foods.

Our kids love their school’s teriyaki beef and rice. Our daughter likes tomato soup day, and our son wants any menu item that includes mashed potatoes and gravy. Even if they’re not crazy about the main entree, I know there’s a salad bar that offers plenty of other choices to help get them through the day.

I’d love to hear how other families handle school lunches. What do your kids love to eat at school? How do to keep cold lunches interesting? Do you ever go to your child's school for lunch?

By the way, I found this morsel of information on the Olympia School District’s website: Last year, Food Services went through 15,000 lbs. of ground beef, 23,000 lbs. of cheese, 12,000 lbs. of flour for scratch-baking, 10,000 lbs. of romaine lettuce, 66,000 bagels and 800,000 half-pints of milk, which made 570,000 lunches and 200,000 breakfasts at Olympia schools.
