Three to see: Week 8

• Published October 21, 2011

Olympia (7-0 overall, 5-0 4A Narrows) at Bellarmine (7-0, 5-0), 7 p.m. Friday, Memorial Field

This matchup has been talked about since fall practices began in mid-August, and as expected, both come in not only unbeaten overall and ranked in the Top 10 in the 4A polls, but unbeaten in 4A Narrows play, too. Olympia has won six of the past eight league titles, and beat Bellarmine last year, 37-30, at Ingersoll Stadium. QB Trevor Houser joins North Thurston’s Ben Broeker as South Sound’s two quarterbacks who have thrown for more than 1,000 yards. Last week’s 27-3 win over Gig Harbor was only the second game this season Houser didn’t have a touchdown pass, but RB Spenser Killman had a season-best 251 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. The Bears’ defense continues to shine, allowing only 7.7 points per game this season. They’ll have their hands full against a second-ranked Lions team that averages 453 yards of offense a game. Bellarmine topped Shelton, 49-0, last week at Highclimber Stadium, even though Shelton held Bellarmine under its scoring average for the majority of the game. QB Seo Liufau is completing 62 percent of his passes, and one of his favorite targets is UW recruit Michael Rector, who had totaled 547 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Calvin Chandler is right behind with 456 yards and five TDs.

Timberline (3-4 overall, 3-0 3A Narrows) at Capital (4-3, 3-0), 7 p.m. Friday, Ingersoll Stadium

Expect a playoff-type atmosphere, as both teams are locked and loaded going for tonight’s battle of the remaining unbeatens in the 3A Narrows League. Neither team has lost a game in October, and the winner will have the inside track to the league title with one regular-season game remaining. But the winner may not be able to get too comfortable. Should Capital win tonight, lose to Lincoln next week, and Timberline beats Foss next week, there will be a three-way tie for first place at the regular-season finale. Since taking over as the starting quarterback in Week 3, Timberline’s Chris MacNeil has impressed. He’s closing in on 1,000 passing yards and the Capital secondary will be tested against Jordan Thompson and James Segura-Mitchell, who have a combined 636 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Capital has won its past four games in convincing fashion, outscoring its opponents, 141-27. QB Derrick Becker continues to improve and had a mistake-free game last week three-touchdown win over Wilson. The Cougars have gotten big games from its backfield, including a 130-yard performance from Kai Van Sickle last week against the Rams.

Tumwater (5-1 overall, 4-0 2A EvCo) at Black Hills (4-3, 3-2), 7 p.m. Friday, Tumwater District Stadium

The second-ranked Thunderbirds can lock up the EvCo regular-season title and No. 1 seed into the state playoffs with a win in the annual Pioneer Bowl. It’s another milestone game for Tumwater coach Sid Otton, who will be going for his 300th Tumwater victory. His record at Tumwater is 299-104 with a career record of 332-123. The T-Birds are averaging 295.5 rushing yards per game, led by Andrew Brown’s 7.9 yards per carry. TE Zach Wimberly leads the team with nine touchdowns – six rushing, three receiving. In four games, the defense has allowed seven points or viewer, including last week’s 52-7 win over River Ridge. This is a home game for Black Hills, and the Wolves need a win and lots help from teams above them tonight and next week to keep their playoff hopes alive. This is the team’s last league game before a nonleague matchup against Woodland next week. The Wolves have dropped two straight after spending a week atop the EvCo standings. Josh Freeto score both the tema’s touchdowns in last week’s 35-14 loss to North Thurston, and RB Cameron Stone rushed for 126 yards on 27 carries, but was held out of the end zone.
