UW HOOPS: Tony Wroten says he’ll be back for exhibition

SEATTLE – There was no hesitation from Tony Wroten when the heralded freshman was asked about being ready for the University of Washington men’s basketball team’s season opener against Georgia State on Nov. 12.

Wroten made it clear that not only would he be ready for that game, he’d be back sooner.

“I will be playing in the exhibition game (Nov. 4) against Seattle Pacific,” he said. “I’ve got a good supporting cast, great doctors, I feel great. The trainer is telling me good things.”

Wroten underwent arthroscopic surgery Oct. 20 on his right knee.

“This was some scar tissue that was uncomfortable that was removed,” coach Lorenzo Romar said.

Wroten tore the anterior cruciate ligament playing football during his junior year of high school, so follow-up procedures are relatively common.

“It’s minor in every sense of the word,” Romar said.

Wroten had been playing through some discomfort last season as well.

“It had been bothering me all season,” he said. “It was sore because I’m not used to practicing every day like this. The last couple days it was getting worse.”

Romar said Wroten could have played the season without having the procedure, but the pain would have been nagging. The surgery was a chance to give him some relief.

Wroten wasn’t pleased at first, but when he was told he wouldn’t miss any games, that offered him solace. And the idea of being pain-free was a selling point.

“I was feeling good enough to play, but now the doctors said I’m going to be better and quicker and have less pain with the surgery,” the Garfield High graduate said. “I can’t wait to get out there.”

Wroten will likely return to practice Monday.

SCRIMMAGE A NO-GO

It was supposed to be the best competition the Huskies would face this season.

Instead of having their usual intrasquad scrimmage today, Romar tried to bring in some familiar and outstanding competition.

He had planned to have eight former Huskies – six currently in the NBA – to scrimmage against his team. Not only would it have been good for his team, but it would have been a good way for the NBA players to get in some time on the court.

The team of ex-Huskies was supposed to include Brandon Roy, Isaiah Thomas, Jon Brockman, Quincy Pondexter, Nate Robinson, Will Conroy, Spencer Hawes and Mike Jensen.

However, because the current and former players were tweeting about it and because Romar mentioned it to the media – on the radio Tuesday morning, then later in his news conference – the NCAA could have construed those actions as the school trying to promote/publicize the scrimmage, which is a violation of NCAA rules. So it was canceled.
