Members of The Olympian sports staff used input from area high school coaches, season statistics and their observations to select the 2011 All-Area football team.

OFFENSE

Conner Schultz

Olympia

Offensive line, 5-11, 215, senior

Coach Bill Beattie called Schultz the Bears’ best blocker. On defense, he wasn’t bad at linebacker, either. A deserving all-Narrows 4A selection as a two-way player.

Elliott Orcutt

Timberline

Offensive line, 6-2, 230, senior

Somebody had to open up the off-tackle creases for Narrows 3A offensive MVP Spencer Crump, and Orcutt was that guy. He also did not give up a sack in 2011.

Spenser Killman

Olympia

Running back, 6-0, 190, senior

Despite missing three games with a shoulder injury, Killman was Olympia’s backfield workhorse and an all-Narrows 4A pick (1,167 yards, 12 TDs).

Jordan Randall

Capital

Offensive line, 6-2, 220, senior

The Cougars’ only two-way, first-team all-Narrows 3A pick opened up gaping holes for the team’s rushing attack – no matter who was carrying the ball.

Zak Porche

Timberline

Punter, 5-9, 205, senior

Coach Nick Mullen calls him a “truck” on rugby punts. He not only averaged nearly 49 yards per attempt but also ran three fake punts for first downs. He also started at linebacker.

Kai Van Sickle

Capital

Running back, 6-0, 190, junior

Part of a tradition of great tailbacks, Van Sickle finished with 1,903 rushing yards. He also broke the school’s single-game rushing mark twice (310 vs. Lincoln; 380 vs. West Seattle).

Alex Dumar

North Thurston

Offensive line, 6-0, 230, senior

A unanimous first-team all-EvCo pick, he was the only senior on a young Rams offensive line that kept quarterback Ben Broeker out of harm’s way.

Trevor Houser

Olympia

Quarterback, 5-11, 175, senior

His breakout season (1,814 yards passing, 17 TDs) was a big reason the Bears were so potent on offense. He set a school record with five touchdown passes in a victory over Shelton.

Jordan Thompson

Timberline

Wide receiver, 6-3, 195, senior

A dangerous all-purpose weapon returned, he two kickoffs for TDs and added 499 receiving yards and 10 scores. He was voted an all-Narrows 3A player at receiver and defensive back.

Joey Renaud

North Thurston

Kicker, 5-8, 145, senior

Not the biggest player, but his leg was powerful and dependable. He led the team in scoring with 63 points – including kicking four field goals.

Landon Rushton

North Thurston

Wide receiver, 6-0, 165, senior

A favorite downfield target, Rushton led the EvCo with 700 receiving yards and had a team-high 11 TDs. He had catches for at least 30 yards in seven games.

Ben Broeker

North Thurston

Quarterback, 6-5, 205, senior

His fantastic season (1,612 passing yards, 22 TDs) netted him 2A EvCo offensive MVP honors, and he leaves the school No. 1 in career TD passes (35) and No. 2 in passing yardage (2,798 yards).

Devante Harris

Tenino

All-purpose, 5-10, 150, junior

The 1A Southwest Washington Evergreen offensive MVP accounted for more than 2,500 all-purpose yards and 31 TDs. As a quarterback, he ran for 1,542 yards, passed for 782.

Zach Wimberly

Tumwater

Tight end, 6-3, 220, senior

When the EvCo player of the year suffered a late-season injury, the Thunderbirds struggled on offense. So versatile, he lined up as the “wildcat” quarterback. Scored 10 TDs.

Josh Hanson

Tumwater

Offensive line, 6-7, 245, senior

The Portland State commit was a mammoth hole-opener, and anchored an offensive line that helped the Thunderbirds average 267 rushing yards a game.

DEFENSE

Brandon Wetzel

Timberline

Linebacker, 6-0, 200, junior

Flourished in his first full season at middle linebacker, and had an intense nose for making plays (117 tackles, 17 tackles for loss). Co-defensive player of the year in Narrows 3A.

Carlos Moiza

Olympia

Defensive lineman, 5-11, 205, senior

The Bears like those undersized pass rushers, and Moiza created havoc off the edge as a three-year starter (11 TFL, seven sacks). Also, he was a first-time player on offense at left guard.

Bentley Tran

Olympia

Linebacker, 5-9, 180, senior

Reads his keys from the weak-side position as well as any defender coach Bill Beattie has had. He set school records with 130 tackles this season – 23 in one game.

Mat Cox

Capital

Defensive lineman, 6-6, 225, junior

Anchor at left-side defensive end is tall and rangy, and utilized his long wing span to fend off blocks. He had five sacks. He also plays on the varsity basketball team.

Riley Prentice

Tumwater

Linebacker, 5-11, 180, senior

Doesn’t say much – until he has to. Co-EvCo defensive MVP led team with 84 tackles from middle linebacker, and is the reigning 2A state 160-pound wrestling champion.

Jaimie Bryant

Tumwater

Defensive lineman, 6-6, 280, junior

Major NCAA Division I prospect was double-teamed from the first snap, despite moving around on the line. The all-EvCo honoree finished with 34 tackles and one sack.

Matt Reid

North Thurston

Defensive back, 5-8, 155, senior

Don’t be fooled by the small frame – this three-year starter packs a punch. Such a sure-handed tackler, he moved to strong safety this season (65 tackles, five fumbles caused).

Zedekiah Higgs

Olympia

Defensive back, 6-1, 195, senior

He has the look of somebody ready to play at the college level. A fast strong safety, he dominated the outside against all comers. He had 58 tackles and five interceptions.

Jacob Swilley

Yelm

Defensive back, 5-10, 180, junior

Wherever the Tornados needed him, at free safety or cornerback, Swilley answered the call (65 tackles, eight pass deflections). Also played middle linebacker in goal-line formations.

Jacob Anderson

North Thurston

Defensive lineman, 6-1, 245, senior

Former all-Narrows 4A linebacker gained 30 pounds last offseason, was moved to tackle and ended up being the Bears’ most physical guy (60 tackles, seven sacks).

Steven Malepeai

Capital

Linebacker, 6-0, 230, senior

Cougars aimed to pressure quarterbacks out of their 3-5-3 scheme, and this Hawaii native applied it from inside. Voted co-Narrows 3A defensive MVP (67 tackles, three sacks).

Rocky Patchin

North Thurston

Coach of the year

The school’s winningest football coach (128 wins in 20 seasons) led the Rams to their sixth state playoff appearance during his tenure and to their most victories (nine) since the 2000 season.

Mitch Gueller

Chehalis

Defensive back, 6-3, 205, senior

What can’t this guy do? Heading into the 2A semifinals, this Washington State baseball signee has amassed nearly 3,000 all-purpose yards as a quarterback/running back/safety.
