College basketball: Men's preview capsules for Saint Martin's, Evergreen and SPSCC

• Published November 29, 2011

SAINT MARTIN’S SAINTS
Coach: Keith Cooper, ninth year (96-125 record)
2010-11 season: 14-15, 7-11 in GNAC (7th place)
Returning starters: PG Brady Bomber, SF Roger O’Neill and PF Jeremy Green.
Projected starting five: PG Brady Bomber, 5-10, Jr.; SG Ryan Votaw, 6-1, Sr.; SF Roger O’Neill, 6-5, Jr.; PF Jeremy Green, 6-6, Sr.; C Brok Pendleton, 6-6, Sr.
Skinny: Limited scholarship opportunities have really shaped the Saints’ roster – and, more importantly, how Cooper coaches it. For SMU to win, it needs to play efficient basketball via controlled possessions. O’Neill and Green should be a fun, high-scoring, big-playmaking duo out on the wing, and Bomber gives the Saints a tough-minded perimeter presence. But what Blake Poole, the GNAC player of the year last season, gave the team last season as a low-post threat. SMU does not have that this season.

THE EVERGREEN STATE COLLEGE GEODUCKS
Coach: Arvin Mosley, Jr., second year (8-20 record)
2010-11 season: 8-20, 5-13 in Cascade Conference (9th place)
Returning starters: PG Marice Tolliver and SG Tyrell Stephens.
Projected starting five: PG Marice Tolliver, 6-6, Sr.; SG Tyrell Stephens, 5-9, Sr.; SF Marcus Buren, 5-10, Sr.; PF Travis Wagner, 6-4, Jr.; C Patrick Lewis, 6-4, Sr.
Skinny: When promising guard Mikey Hope (knee) was lost for the season in October, the dominoes began to fall. And very early, Mosley made an almost radical decision by moving his tallest and most gifted scorer – Tolliver, a Mount Tahoma High product – to point guard. And as many shots as Tolliver is expected to take per game, he is also the team’s best perimeter passer. Secondary scoring should come from Stephens, Wagner and Julian Holliday, who are streaky.

SOUTH PUGET SOUND CLIPPERS
Coach: Curtis Norwood, second year (4-20 record)
2010-11 season: 4-20, 2-14 in NWAACC West (8th place)
Returning starters: C Alexey Lagerberg.
Projected starting five: PG Tyler Vanderhoff, 6-0, So.; SG Scotty Ewing, 5-8, Fr.; SF Jamey Smith, 6-1, Fr.; PF Anye Turner, 6-7, Fr.; C Alexey Lagerberg, 6-7, So.
Skinny: Norwood learned very quickly that this is a division normally full of athletes. So, he recruited plenty of them for his up-tempo style of play. The player who will not only likely turn a few heads of the SPSCC faithful, but big-college coaches as well is Turner, out of Black Hills High School. Turner ideally would be a college wing, but he will have to play more inside for the Clippers. Ball-handling outside Will Sharp was an issue last season, and SPSCC has a couple of good ones in Vanderhoff and Rasaan Stephens, who are battling for the starting spot.
