FISHING REPORT

Anglers looking to get out this week will likely want to hit a river, especially as they drop following last week’s rain. Some of the hottest action, but also the most crowded, has been Minter Creek for chum salmon.

RIVERS

Columbia: The sturgeon catch has been light. Boat anglers in the Woodland area are catching a few legal-size fish, said a state report.

Cowlitz: Anglers continue to catch a mixture of coho, steelhead, and sea-run cutthroat trout. The best steelhead action has been at Blue Creek, said Mike Chamberlain of Ted’s Sports Center.

People are catching some coho at Barrier Dam, said Marshall Borsom at Fish Country.

Green: The fishing has been slow throughout the river.

Lewis: On the North Fork, anglers are catching a mixture of fall chinook, coho, and steelhead, including some winter-run fish, said a state report.

Minter: This creek seems to be the chum hot spot right now. People are foul-hooking some fish because there are so many, but they are still taking home some bright fish.

Nisqually: Just a few chum are being caught right now.

Olympic Coast: The steelhead fishing has been fair to good. Action over the weekend was best on the Bogachiel, thanks in part to falling water levels. The Hoh was still a bit high on Tuesday.

Puyallup: The action seems to be picking up as people are starting to catch some chum salmon.

Skookumchuck: People are fishing with spinners to catch some coho, but most of the fish are dark. The winter-run steelhead have yet to show up in any numbers.

Tilton: Tacoma Power employees last week released 327 coho adults, three jacks, four fall chinook adults and three cutthroat trout into the river at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton.

Yakima: There has been some good trout fishing in the Farmlands stretch, said a staffer at The Evening Hatch. Try fishing stonefly nymphs under an indicator, or try size 18 Purple Prince nymphs or red Brassies. Success with streamer has slowed down.

LAKES

Chelan: The lake trout have put on the feed bag, said Anton Jones of Darrell and He suggested trying Mack’s Lures Cha Cha Squidders in green and glow colors or Worden Lures U20 Flatfish in purple glow.

Kitsap: Recently stocked with rainbow trout, the lake has been fishing very well. An angler online said he was catching them on a Rapala crankbait.

Mayfield: There are reports that people are still catching a few trout, Borsom said.

Rufus Woods: The fishing for triploid rainbow trout remains very good.

SALTWATER

Tacoma: The salmon fishing in the South Sound has been slow in recent days because of the weather. There were just five anglers checked by the state over the weekend at Tacoma ramps and they had just one blackmouth.

People are finding fish holding on the bottom in water 120-150 feet deep, said Art Tachell at Point Defiance Boathouse. Crabbing in the area has been fair.
