Maintaining Capitol Lake makes sense

Being a member of the Capitol Lake Improvement and Protection Association, I’ve watched with interest The Olympian’s “Seven Wonders of Thurston County” poll. Obviously I was elated to see the final results naming Capitol Lake and the Capitol Campus as being the No. 1 wonder.

It makes this longtime advocate for cleaning up (i.e., dredging) and maintaining Capitol Lake feel much better about the community’s interest in preserving Capitol Lake.

One wonders why a few in the community continue their attack on the lake. It is obvious now that the great majority of this community support the lake.

CLIPA, through its science and policy panel, has outlined a process that maintains the lake, improves the Deschutes watershed, improves water quality and is far less costly than reverting the lake to an estuarial mud flat.

The mud flat proposal requires removal of the Fifth Avenue Dam and construction of a new bridge (much like the Fourth Avenue Bridge), a very, very costly proposal.

So yes, I am an advocate for improving and maintaining the lake and watershed. It just makes sense.
