At one point, the suspect struck a trooper’s patrol car in downtown Olympia. The police SUV suffered minor damage and the trooper was not injured, the State Patrol reported.
Troopers were searching for the driver, his passenger and the silver SUV.
The incident began in the Centralia area around 3:30 a.m., State Patrol trooper Guy Gill reported. Centralia police tried to stop the SUV because the occupants were suspected of burglarizing a jewelry boutique.
The SUV took off and headed north on Interstate 5, Gill said. The SUV drove without any lights on.
Troopers picked up the pursuit around Tumwater Boulevard. At times, the suspect drove 105 mph.
The driver got off in Olympia and spun out on a city street. As a trooper was positioning his SUV, the suspect regained control of his vehicle and struck the trooper’s vehicle, Gill said.
The suspect got back onto I-5 and headed north. At one point, troopers spotted the passenger throwing several items, including bolt cutters, from the moving vehicle, Gill said.
The suspect got off the freeway at Mounts Road. He went over the highway and then went north in the southbound lanes.
Troopers then terminated the pursuit because the suspect’s actions had gotten too dangerous, Gill said.
“We discontinue a pursuit when it reaches points like that,” he said.
Troopers believe the suspects got off I-5 in DuPont.
