The South Sound Chapter of Puget Sound Anglers will hold its first South Sound Salmon Derby this summer in the waters south of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

The derby will be held Aug. 18 and is part of the 2012 Northwest Salmon Derby Series.

The South Sound chapter has held derbies in Hood Canal the last 11 years. This year, chapter members felt a South Sound Derby in the Olympia/Lacey area was long over due.

“There are a lot of opportunities in the South Sound to make this derby very successful. Olympia has a lot to offer,” said Gary Couch, long-time member and local businessman.

Chapter president Robert Griego said the group is already organizing the derby.

“There is a lot of preparation involved, so we are starting right away to organize and plan the derby,” he said. “We are looking for title sponsors, businesses or individuals who want to support or be part of the event.”

Prizes for the derby will include cash awards to the first-, second-, and third-place winners. Fourth- through 10th-place winners will receive fishing tackle or boating products. The derby will conclude with an awards dinner and raffle at the end of the day.

A free kids derby also will be part of the event.

In addition, all participants in the South Sound derby will also have a chance to win a fishing boat fully equipped for salmon fishing. The boat is raffled off among participants in the Northwest Salmon Derby Series. This year’s prize is a 21-foot River Hawk boat, a 150hp Mercury four-stroke motor, a 9.9 Yamaha kicker motor with a galvanized trailer and full electronics package.

Derby chairman Michael Bartoldo said the group is beginning to line up sponsors and derby contributors.
