Poulsbo Marine Science Center

Where: 18743 Front St. N.E., Poulsbo

When: Thursdays-Sundays, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Mission: To promote learning and appreciation for the marine environment and underwater technology by enhancing science education with hands on learning and conservation.

What to do: The center’s exhibits hold more than 100 species of marine plants and animals found in the Puget Sound. There is a tidepool tank at which visitors are encouraged to gently touch the creatures. There also is a theater and unique aquaria that allow visitors an up close look at creatures such as sea stars, urchins, crab, shrimp and sea cucumbers.

History: The Marine Science Society was brought to Poulsbo from Seattle by a local teacher in the 1980s. The center moved into its Front Street location in 1990. In 2005, the lack of firm financial backing forced the closure of the center. The center reopened in May.

Cost: Free. Donations accepted.
