Unlike previous seasons, the South Sound Classic will have set games instead of a first- and second-round tournament format. Because one team backed out, River Ridge boys basketball coach and tournament director Jeremy Landram made changes to the format. He also made the event an all-level tournament for his Hawks.
The River Ridge boys “C” and JV teams face Capital’s “C” and JV teams today, and play Olympia’s “C” and JV teams Wednesday.
“It’s a cool opportunity (to play at Saint Martin’s) and it will be great experience for them to do that,” Landram said.
The boys varsity games feature two 4A programs, Kentridge and Skyview, one 3A program, Foss, and River Ridge at 2A.
Skyview, from Vancouver, Wash., got to full strength last week. A handful of players were a part of the Storm’s football team that played in the Class 4A state title game on Dec. 3.
Foss is unbeaten at 5-0. Juniors Marcus Chambers and Dezmond Trent lead the Falcons in scoring.
One girls game will take place today when EvCo foes River Ridge and Aberdeen take to the court at 6:15 p.m.
Daily admission prices are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for students with ASB card ($4 without).
Other local holiday basketball tournaments in Lacey and Olympia are scheduled for next week. The North Thurston Holiday Tournament at North Thurston High School and the Capital Holiday Classic at Capital High School are Dec. 28-29.
