Thurston Conservation District Board seeks applicants

The Thurston Conservation District Board of Supervisors has two openings – one elected and one appointed – on its all-volunteer, five-member board.

The board, which serves without compensation, sets and maintains district policies and programs for the management and conservation of natural resources. Applicants must own land or operate a farm within the district boundaries, and be registered voters.

Candidate information and nominations are due by Jan. 31 at the district office, 2918 Ferguson St. S.W., Suite A, Tumwater. The election is set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 25 at the district office. Absentee ballots will be available at the office Feb. 1-22 and must be received by the county Elections Office by 5 p.m. Feb. 24.

Bob Koch now faces a three-way contest for re-election as Franklin County commissioner for District 2 as Lee Barrow, a Franklin County sheriff's detective and Connell city councilman, jumped into the race.

11 people apply for Port of Kennewick board vacancy

Eleven people have applied to fill a vacancy created on the Port of Kennewick Board of Commissioners with the resignation of David Hanson.

Hanson, who declared in January that he planned to resign and set the date as March 31, served as a port commissioner for 10 years.

Hanson was the subject of a review of port expenses last year. The monthslong search identified about $1,200 in costs that were questioned. Hanson simply paid back the money, noting that he did nothing wrong and that "mistakes were made on both sides." The audit cost the commission about $68,000.
