Wrestling: Olympia will honor longtime coach Rockey Isley Thursday night

Longtime Olympia wrestling coach Rockey Isley will be retiring at the end of the season after 35 years, and the school will honor him during the Bears' final home match of the season Thursday night against Gig Harbor.

Isley began coaching and teaching physical education at Olympia in 1976. He has coached more than 1,200 wrestlers, including two state champions; Doug Sharp wont he 178-pound AA state title in 1980, and Clay Stablein won the 115-pound AA state title in 1982 and coached more than 50 state placers. He was inducted into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame in 2009, and has been honored as the Class 4A coach of the year.

“I’ve been around a lot of good young men who were really dedicated to the sport that’s has be hampered (at the college level),” Isley said.
