House Bill 2398 would transfer management of the state library from the secretary of state’s office to the University of Washington.
Decisions about additional high school graduation requirements would be made at the local level under House Bill 2411. The Legislature would focus on core career and college-preparatory requirements.
House Joint Resolution 4225 would propose an amendment to the state constitution requiring a balanced budget.
MONDAY
An MLK Day Rally to protect programs from budget cuts will begin at 1 p.m. on the Capitol steps, followed by sit-ins in legislators’ offices. Washington Can is organizing the event.
Muslims Capitol Day will begin at 9 a.m. at the flag circle, sponsored by the Council on American Islamic Relations. There also will be an MLK Day Awareness About Muslims event at 8 a.m. on the Trivoli Fountain South Lawn, sponsored by the Islamic Circle of North America Washington.
Planned Parenthood teen educators will lobby for family-planning funding and the Reproductive Parity Act at the Capitol. The bill would require health plans that cover maternity care to provide equal coverage for abortion.
A work session on the Supreme Court’s recent McCleary decision, which ruled Washington is not sufficiently funding basic education, will be in the House Ways and Means Committee. It will meet at 3:30 p.m. in Hearing Room A of the O’Brien Building.
A bill that would require employers be notified when a worker’s commercial driver’s license is suspended will have a public hearing. House Bill 2234 also would require employers be notified of drivers’ noncompliance with child-support orders. The hearing is in the House Transportation Committee, which meets at 3:30 p.m. in Hearing Room B of the O’Brien Building.
A bill to encourage “lean strategies” in state government will have a vote in the House Committee on State Government and Tribal Affairs. House Bill 2173 would allow agencies to allocate up to $200,000 of their funding to develop the cross-discipline business-management plan, designed to reduce costs while improving product quality.
House Bill 6178, which relates to implementing the Affordable Care Act, will have a public hearing. It will be in the Senate Committee on Health and Long-Term Care, which meets at 1:30 p.m. in Hearing Room 4 of the Cherberg Building.
