Voters must support children’s education

As a parent with children that attend the North Thurston schools, I want to encourage readers to vote “yes” for schools on Feb. 14.

I have two children who attend Lakes Elementary and one who attends Timberline High School. As a parent who is very active in my children’s schools, I know and see on a daily basis the impact that these programs have on our children.

My fifth-grader is in band and choir, and benefits immensely from these programs. There are statistics that prove music education to be valuable in their education. Studies show it can increase SAT scores for college entrance and prepare them for their future.

This levy accounts for 22 percent of the operating budget for the district. It helps to pay for teachers, activities and athletics, band, orchestra, choir, librarians, books, transportation, special education, custodians, the arts, nurses, counselors, technology and gifted education which are vital in enriching their lives.

Imagine not having these things to offer our kids.

In a time where our economy isn’t so great, now is not the time to cut from our children’s education.

It is important to know that this is not a new tax. It is just a replacement levy from 2010. If the levy is not passed we will have to cut $30 million from levy-funded programs.

So please vote “yes” and continue to invest in our children. They are our future.
