Heck postpones Thurston kickoff for Congress

Democrat Denny Heck of Olympia is postponing his formal campaign kickoff for the 10th Congressional District that had been planned Saturday at the Olympia Ballroom. It will take place at 11 .a.m. Feb. 4 at the same location, campaign spokesman Phil Gardner said today.

However, a "Pierce County Gives Congress Heck" is still on for Sunday, Jan. 22, at the Lakewood Senior Activity Center, 9112 Lakewood Drive S.W. Heck is scheduled to speak at both events which are fee and open to the public.

Two Republicans also are running in Washington's newest congressional district - the 10th, which stretches from Shelton to Olympia, Lacey and north to Puyallup and University Place. They are: Dick Muri of Steilacoom and Stan Fleming of University Place, both of whom are on the Pierce County Council.

Denny Heck's campaign say it is reporting more than $400,000 raised in the first quarter for the Olympia Democrat's run in Washington's new 10 th Congressional District. If accurate, it brings campaign totals above $1 million.

Heck has been raising funds well ahead of his two Republican opponents, Dick Muri of Lakewood and Stan Flemming of University Place. The Republicans are both on the Pierce County Council, and Heck is an entrepreneur with a deep background in state politics.

Data on file at the Federal Elections Commission shows Heck had $580,557 cash on hand as of Dec. 31, while Muri had $69,108 and Flemming had $986. That picture obviously is already changing with reports due April 15 at the Federal Election Commission.

Democrat Denny Heck is kicking off his campaign for the new 10th district congressional seat this weekend with events Saturday in Olympia and Sunday in Lakewood.

The new 10th district, carved out by the Washington State Redistricting Commission to accommodate the growing state population, runs from Shelton to Olympia and north to include Pierce County communities as far north as University Place and Puyallup.

Democrat Denny Heck takes his second campaign for Congress on what he calls a listening tour that starts Saturday in Shelton, then goes on University Place, Lacey, Puyallup and Steilacoom over the next two weeks. He is running in the newly created 10th district which runs from Shelton to Thurston County and north to Pierce County communities including University Place and Puyallup.

The Mason County stop is at 12:15 p.m. Saturday [Feb. 18] – hosted by Democratic state Rep. Kathy Haigh at the Shelton Civic Center, 525 W. Cota St., Shelton.

Democrat Denny Heck and Republican Dick Muri are the first two clear candidates in the state’s new 10th Congressional District, assuming its final boundaries are the same or highly similar to the draft map issued this morning by the Washington State Redistricting Commission.

UPDATE: A third candidate, Pierce County Councilman Stan Fleming, says he also is in the hunt.

Olympia's Denny Heck kicks off campaign, says he'd work for jobs as lawmaker

Democrat Denny Heck formally kicked off the Thurston County leg of his congressional campaign today, playing up his three-decade-old connection to Olympia and pledging to work for a “Chevy truck economy – built to last” in America.

The former statehouse politician-turned-entrepreneur-turned aspiring politician drew a subdued crowd of about 125 people to the event at his Olympia Ballroom this morning. The kickoff had been delayed by the recent snowstorm and was his second event – following a kickoff two weekends ago in Pierce County, which has the majority of voters in Washington’s newly created 10th Congressional District.

Two Republicans with military backgrounds are also in the race, Dick Muri of Steilacoom and Stan Fleming of University Place, both of whom are on the Pierce County Council. Olympia financial planner David Castillo says he is thinking about a GOP run as well.
