The Olympian got it wrong in its editorial titled “Same-sex marriage could be distraction from budget crisis.”

To help our state’s budget we need revenue. Revenue comes from people who spend money. People need jobs to have money to spend. The wedding industry creates jobs and brings money into our state.

Some businesses that benefit directly are florists, restaurants, hotels, airlines, reception halls, caterers, cake decorators, DJs, car rentals, tuxedo/dress sales and any place that sells potential wedding gifts.

Realtors, mortgage companies, title companies, construction industry and home improvement stores all benefit when newly married couples buy a house together.

When New York legalized same-sex marriages they experienced an estimated 14 percent increase in marriages. Forbes magazine says there could be an immediate windfall of about $17 billion if gay marriage were made legal nationally.

Marriage equality will help our economy at a time when we most need it.
