Volunteers working with Washington Trails Association turned out for 580 one-day work parties on 153 trails around the state in 2011.

According to the trail advocacy group, more than 2,600 people contributed nearly 100,000 hours of work last year.

All said, the association led a total of 720 trail work parties and accounted for 1,006 days of volunteer trail maintenance – the equivalent of 2 1/2 years of trail work.

Volunteers removed brush from overgrown trails, logged out wind-blown trees, built bridges, puncheon and turnpikes, reworked tread and performed many other critical tasks on the trails.

WTA crews worked in five national forests, two national parks, seven state parks, two county park systems, the state Department of Natural Resources and a city park system.
