Olympia police have arrested two men who might have committed more than 100 Olympia-area vehicle prowls in the past six months.

Two men, one 20, the other 26, both live at a Fox Avenue address but were arrested seperately this month.

The 20-year-old was arrested Jan. 15 after someone reported seeing him break the window of a car parked at Capitol Way and State Street. An police officer later found him with slivers and fragments of glass on his sweatshirt, and he had three purses in a backpack he was carrying, court papers state.

As police investigated, detective Matt Renschler identified an alleged accomplice, the 26-year-old, in a theft of a rifle from a man’s truck Jan. 26. Police recovered the stolen rifle in the front yard of Fir Street home Sunday, court papers state.

Police have executed a search warrant at the suspects’ home and recovered a number of stolen items, Sgt. Aaron Jelcick said.

It’s possible the pair are tied to additional burglaries, and that more suspects could face charges, Jelcick said. The 20-year-old told a detective he and the alleged accomplice have committed “more than 100 vehicle prowls within the past six months in the Olympia area,” court papers state.

Jelcick said many stolen items likely have been sold or fenced.

“I certainly believe that these individuals are responsible for a large number of property crimes throughout Thurston County,” Jelcick said. “We will see a drop in property crimes as a result of these arrests.”
