Signing Day: Timberline, Tumwater lead the way with a combined five football signees

Whether it’s the rosy-red artificial turf or Eastern Washington’s NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) title in 2011, Jordan Thompson wasn’t short on good reasons to play college football for the Eagles.

On Wednesday morning, the Timberline High School senior signed a letter of intent to play football for the Cheney-based school in which he described as “like a big family”. He was one of two South Sound football players who signed to play for an FBS team; Tumwater lineman Josh Hanson honored his verbal commitment to Portland State in October and signed with the Big Sky rival Vikings.

Fellow Timberline senior James Segura-Mitchell joined Thompson in the Blazers’ signing day celebration, signing with Central Washington. Other area Division II football signees are Tumwater’s Hayden Klein (CWU) and Taylor Wood (Western Oregon).

Knowing Eastern won the 2011 FCS title, especially with a local flavor of South Sound- and Washington-based players, was a big influence in his decision. “They have the coaching staff to get there and have a nice recruiting class,” Thompson said. “One thing that they stressed is they all play as a unit.”
