GNAC welcomes 2 schools for men's soccer starting this fall

The University of Mary, which is located in Bismarck, N.D., and the University of Sioux Falls of Sioux Falls, S.D., have agreed to become affiliate members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in men's soccer, GNAC Commissioner Dave Haglund announced Thursday.

The two NCAA Division II universities will begin play in the GNAC and the NCAA West Region beginning this fall.

Men's soccer in the GNAC will now have eight programs -- Saint Martin's, Montana State University Billings, Northwest Nazarene, Seattle Pacific, Simon Fraser, and Western Washington, and now Mary and Sioux Falls.

For the first time, Lacey and Olympia hosted three state tournaments – 3A state fastpitch and 4A/3A and 2A state volleyball. Notable: Garland has 14 returning letterwinners from last year’s GNAC runner-up team behind Western Oregon, but the Saints have struggled early on. They dropped their first nine games, but currently sit 3-5 in the GNAC and 7-19 overall. Pitching will be the Saints’ strength.

Basketball: GNAC tournaments come to Saint Martin's Feb. 29, March 1-3

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference Division II men's and women's basketball tournaments come to Lacey this week. The top six teams on the men's and women's side will play in the tournament, which begins Wednesday for the men and Thursday for the women. Saint Martin's men and women did not qualify for the tournament; the top six teams qualify. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic berth into the Division II national tournament.

Saint Martin's University will add six new members to its athletic hall of fame/hall of honor as the Class of 2012 Saturday night when the Saints' men's basketball team closes out the season hosting Northwest Nazarene. Tip-off is 7 p.m. at Marcus Pavilion.
