Olympia Local Foods, which operates OlympiaLocalFoods.com, has received a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The grant will be used to build a sustainable poultry farm and to market rotisserie chicken to the Olympia area, co-owner Tom Husmann said.

Olympia Local Foods began as an online local food marketplace. It now operates out of a 1,600-square-foot store on Black Lake Boulevard after its much more modest beginnings on a 300-square-foot loading dock in a warehouse on Mottman Road.

"We are building a community resource that makes buying fresh local food more convenient and affordable," Husmann said in a statement.

The USDA this month awarded $40.2 million in grants to 298 farmers, ranchers and rural business ventures in 44 states and Puerto Rico.
