Former U.S. House speaker Newt Gingrich brings his presidential campaign to the Northwest tomorrow and Friday – including a Friday morning stop at the state Capitol. He is the latest Republican hopeful to visit the state in recent weeks – after former U.S. senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, Congressman Ron Paul of Texas, and Mitt Romney’s son, Josh – ahead of Washington’s Republican caucuses on March 3.

The Evergreen State caucuses could provide momentum going into the influential Super Tuesday events of March 6.

Gingrich and his wife, Callista, are in Arizona today, and Thursday they’ll be in the Tri-Cities and Spokane as well as Idaho, according to his campaign. Washington State Republican Party spokesman Josh Amato said Gingrich also plans stops in Western Washington on Friday, including a 9:45 a.m. visit with House Republican leaders followed by talks with the Republican caucuses in the House and Senate. He also plans to talk to his closest friends – the press corps, who else – at 11.

Other rallies are planned in south King County at 12:30 and at the Historic Everett Theater at 7 p.m.

Pastor Joe Fuiten of Bothell is heading up Gingrich’s state campaign.

In a news release Fuiten said: "We are very excited to have the Speaker and Mrs. Gingrich come campaign in Washington. As Speaker he balanced the budget, reformed welfare, and created millions of new jobs. Today, we need his vision and experience to transform our bloated government, free our people to create jobs, and keep America safe in a dangerous world."

Gingrich also shut down the government in a battle with President Clinton eventually won by the Democrats.

Many in the Washington Republican establishment, including Secretary of State Sam Reed, Dino Rossi and U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers are endorsing Romney, who is expected to visit Washington on March 1. Romney’s son Josh dropped by the Capitol on Monday.
