Help out for Park Day

Park agencies across the South Sound are looking for volunteers to help Saturday with work projects on Park Appreciation Day on Saturday.

Here is a look at some of the efforts in the South Sound:

Lacey: Volunteers and staff from Lacey Parks & Recreation will pull ivy and restore trails at Lake Lois Park. The work party is scheduled for April 22 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The park is at 6020 Seventh Ave. S.E., Lacey. Volunteers may park at the rear of the Safeway store, 6200 Pacific Ave. S.E., Lacey, near the loading dock. Volunteers under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Olympia: A volunteer work party will be held 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at West Bay Park. Volunteers will be weeding, removing invasive plants and planting. See new the bike shelter. Pierce County: For the 11th year, participants are needed to spruce up local parks by trimming limbs, grooming grounds, combing beaches and planting more flowers and trees. This annual event draws thousands of volunteers in cities throughout the county. Events will take place from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday.

Individuals or groups with fewer than 10 participants can simply show up at 9 a.m. and check in at one of the designated park sites.

Groups of 10 or more are asked to pre-register by contacting the liaison listed for the park they are interested in working in. This helps staff to prepare the site with adequate supplies for the work that will be done. Tacoma Nature Center: People are being asked to help pull invasive plants, maintain trails and work on other projects at this small, urban park. Work will be done from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday and is designed for volunteers ages 8 and older. Pre-registration requested. Contact: You can register at metroparkstacoma.org.

Titlow Park: Metro Parks Tacoma and REI are teaming up to lead this work party from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. Help pull invasive ivy, Scotch broom and blackberries, and groom the trails for spring. Contact: Project coordinator Richard Madison at richardm@tacomaparks.com.

Key Peninsula: Key Pen Parks will have work to do at various parks from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. Work will be done at Rocky Creek Conservation Area, state Route 302 and 150th Avenue KPN; Home Park, Eighth Avenue and Key Peninsula Highway North; Maple Hallow, 48th Street and Van Beek Road; and Lakebay 360 Property, state Route 302 at 144th Street KPN.
