State golf: North Thurston's Olivia Lowe, Tumwater's Seth Nickerson are tied for 3rd at girls and boys 2A

A handful of South Sound boys and girls golfers had great opening rounds Tuesday during the first day of the state golf tournaments around the state. Here are some highlights:

-- North Thurston sophomore Olivia Lowe is tied for third at the 2A state girls golf tournament at Lake Spanaway Golf Course after firing a 7-over-par 79 Tuesday afternoon. Lowe will be in the final foursome today with leader Aleana Groenhout of Interlake (75). Lowe placed eighth as a freshman last year.

-- In 1A, Elma's Alexis Keating is atop the leaderboard at The Home Course in DuPont after an opening-round 74. The Colorado-bound senior won the 2A state title as a sophomore, and was runner-up last year at 1A. Her freshman sister, Lauren Keating, sits in third place (80).

-- On the boys side, Tumwater's Seth Nickerson is tied for third at the Class 2A state boys golf tournament at The Classic in Spanaway. Nickerson fired a 5-over 77. Clarkston's Ty Carlson is in the lead with a 76. Chehalis' Brady Calkins is sixth (78).

-- In 4A, Olympia's Dominick Francks, the reigning 4A state champion, will have some work do to Wednesday. He shot a 7-over-par 78 (tied for 11th). Jackson's Kyle Cornett leads the field with a 2-over 74. Francks was 2-under after six holes.
