Basketball: Former Black Hills standout Anye Turner signs with Division II national champion WWU; other recruiting news

• Published May 30, 2012

Former Black Hills High School standout and South Puget Sound Community College freshman Anye Turner signed a letter of intent to play men’s basketball at Western Washington, the defending NCAA Division II national champion.

The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 15.2 points, 11.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks shots – the latter two were leading numbers in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges – and was named first-team West Region and was the region’s defensive and co-freshman of the year this past season.

At Black Hills, Turner guided the Wolves to their first state tournament appearance his senior season in 2010-11.

The Vikings won the NCAA Division II national title this past season and finished 31-5 overall. WWU travels to Durham, N.C. on Oct. 27 to face Duke in an exhibition game.

“I am very happy for the opportunity Anye has been given to be part of Western Washington University’s men’s basketball program,” SPSCC athletic director Pam Charpentier said. “He has been a great student and athlete for Clipper Athletics. We will miss his hard work, leadership and team-first attitude."

Other basketball recruiting news: W.F. West senior Uriah Thomas signed a letter of intent to play women’s basketball at Evergreen. The 6-foot post was the 2A Evergreen Conference’s MVP this past winter, averaging 10 points and seven rebounds and led the Bearcats to a sixth-place finish at the 2A state tournament in March. … Black Hills senior Kylie Hall has given a verbal commitment to play women’s basketball at NYU-Poly, an NCAA Division III program in New York. … Saint Martin’s men’s and women’s basketball teams finalized their recruiting classes for this school year. The Saints men bring in three junior-college transfers, Tyler Idowu, Rei Jensen and Evan Coulter and two freshmen, Isaac Bianchini from Sedro-Wooley and Lucas Shannon from Issaquah. The Saints women’s class is highlighted by two league MVPs – Krista Stabler of Central Kitsap and Ciara Pedroni of Fife. Also in the class are Megan Wiedeman (Skyline), Hattie Kosko (Auburn Mountainview) and Maria Jesse (Holy Names).

SPSCC bolsters recruiting class: After canceling its 2012 season because of lack of players, South Puget Sound Community College’s softball team announced six high school recruits for next season – Timberline’s Ashley Baker, Tenino's Cassie Vance, Olympia’s Amanda Rupright, Tumwater’s Kaleah Milligan, Shelton’s Jordanne Krumpols, and W.F. West’s Frances Camp. Krumphols, a catcher at Shelton, was named the co-offensive MVP of the 4A Narrows League after batting .429 and had 22 stolen bases.
