MLB Draft: Olympia’s Cabe Reiten, W.F. West’s Mitch Gueller expected to be high draft picks

• Published June 03, 2012

Olympia shortstop Cabe Reiten and W.F. West pitcher Mitch Gueller are projected to be high draft picks when the Major League Baseball first-year player draft begins Monday. The draft begins at 4 p.m. PST and can be watched on MLB Network.

The first round and supplemental rounds are Monday, followed by rounds 2 through 15 Tuesday and rounds 16 through 40 are Wednesday.

Bearcats coach Tom Zuber says Gueller, who features a mid-90s mph fastball and has pitched in front of dozens of pro scouts all season, could be taken as high as the first round. The Houston Astros will have the No. 1 overall pick. The last South Sound high school player to be taken in the first round was Centralia’s Jason Stumm in 1999.

Reiten is one of the top high school shortstops in the country, and has been rated as high as No. 15 nationally. He’s slick with the glove and also has pop at the plate. He batted in the lead-off spot this year for Olympia.

Bears coach Todd McDougall says it’s tough to tell where Reiten will be taken, but could be drafted anywhere from a sandwich pick (supplemental pick) to a fifth-rounder. Reiten also will be the first non-pitcher from Olympia drafted in McDougall’s 19-year tenure as head coach.
