Friends of Mia alumni soccer event grows to 8 teams; tournament is Saturday at South Sound Stadium

• Published June 08, 2012

The annual Friends of Mia alumni soccer event has now turned into an eight-team event, creating the first local alumni soccer tournament Saturday (June 9) at South Sound Stadium.

The Friends of Mia alumni soccer game was created three years ago between North Thurston and Timberline boys soccer teams after Mia Deligeannis, young daughter of Timberline graduates Casey Deligeannis and his wife, Lelani Benavente, was diagnosed with leukemia. Mia passed away of leukemia this past April 17.

Teams involved in Saturday’s benefit tournament are: Black Hills, Capital, North Thurston, Olympia, River Ridge, Shelton, Timberline, and Tumwater. North Thurston coach Chris Knudson said there will be approximately 160 former players on hand, including a number of former league MVPs.

Admission is free to the tournament and to the post-tournament party auction at Faith Community Center in Lacey at 6 p.m. However, donations will be accepted and concessions will be available, Knudson said.

“All proceeds from the games and party will go to families dealing with childhood cancer,” he said.
