Extra patrols will take to the streets starting Saturday keeping an eye out for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The DUI enforcement patrols will be in effect from Saturday through July 6, patrolling in areas of the county that have a large number of fatalities or serious injury crashes.

Police departments including Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater, Chehalis Tribal, Tenino, Yelm, the Thurston County Sheriff's and Washington State Patrol will participate in the DUI patrols as part of the Target Zero Task Fore.

The extra patrols are funded by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission with hopes to reach zero deaths or serious injury crashes by 2030.

There were 11 fatal crashes in Thurston County last year, half of which where alcohol or drugs were believed to be a factor.

The Washington State Patrol has removed more than 1,800 impaired drivers from the road in Thurston and Pierce counties so far this year, according to Trooper Guy Gill.
