Olympia charity seeks donated retail space

Cinderella’s Closet Network, an Olympia-based nonprofit organization that offers free and low-cost formal dress rentals, has a wish of its own: A donated retail space.

“Our current retail space has been leased out and we must move before the end of August,” founder Mary Ann Detzler said in a news release. “We are operating out of 1,700 square foot retail space, but could use a bit larger place.”

Each year, about 260 girls and women turn to Cinderella’s Closet Network for gowns for their special school functions, military balls and other formal events. The organization has operated a shop at South Sound Center in Lacey for two years.

We know closing the controversial facility was not an easy decision. The airport’s usefulness to the community at large has been the topic of debate for years. And its passionate, though small, band of proponents have been vocal and organized.

But a 2010 decision to keep the facility open only saw revitalization efforts stall. Without an operator or private investments to make a go of it, the port hired a consulting firm to do an independent study of the airport.

Morris Piha, onetime property kingpin of downtown Bellingham, dies at 79

Morris Piha, a Bellevue developer who was the dominant property owner in downtown Bellingham from the early 1970s into the 1980s, died Tuesday, May 14, at the age of 79. A memorial service was held Friday in Seattle.

At one point, Piha's company owned about 25 buildings downtown, including the Bellingham National Bank building at Holly Street and Cornwall Avenue, the former J.C. Penney Co. and F.W. Woolworth buildings on Cornwall between Holly and Magnolia streets, and the Flatiron building at Bay and Prospect streets.

Piha and his investors also had considerable holdings in downtown Olympia.
