8 Things To Do This Weekend

TONIGHT -- A shared meal: The fourth annual TABLE FOR OLYMPIA -- which is essentially a community picnic and block party that takes over Washington Street downtown with 30 tables end to end -- invites the city to dine together, and enjoy entertainment and children’s activities. The fun begins at 4 p.m. today and stretches to 8 p.m. in the 100 block of Washington Street. Admission is free, but you should bring your own silverware, plates, cups and food to eat and share. TONIGHT -- Going a little batty: Bat researcher Greg Falxa will be leading a BAT WALK AT CAPITOL LAKE starting at 9 tonight. (A great way to walk off all the food you ate at Table for Olympia!) Falxa does a couple of these walks each summer, and sometimes they draw more than 100 people. Participants should meet on the sidewalk in front of Marathon Park on Deschutes Parkway, and plan to be walking about an hour on the sidewalk from Marathon Park to the Fifth Avenue dam. Falxa says he's been studying bats in this area for 10 years, and he'll talk a bit about local bats, answer questions, and show folks how and where to watch the bats arriving at the lake from distant colonies. The walk is free, and you don't have to pre-register.

THROUGH THE WEEKEND -- Feed me, Seymour: KIDS AT PLAY, Capital Playhouse’s children’s summer theater program, kicks off the summer youth theater season with “LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS,” the quirky horror, comedy musical about a plant that turns into a big problem. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. today through Sunday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Capital Playhouse, 612 E. Fourth Ave., Olympia. Tickets are $12.50 general admission, $10 for seniors, and students 16 and younger. THROUGH THE WEEKEND -- It’s all about the music: Harlequin Productions’ “SUMMER SESSION: SET IN THE ’70s” is packed with as many songs as one evening of theater can hold, and features a backdrop of projected images that help tell the stories sung and danced by the cast and accompanied by a live band. The musical revue continues at State Theater, 202 Fourth Ave. E., through July 29. (Demand has extended its run.) Showtimes are 8 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays; tickets are $25-$38. SATURDAY -- Under the stars: The weather is finally warm, just in time for the kickoff of Lacey Parks and Recreation’s annual OUTDOOR CONCERTS and CINEMA SERIES on Saturday at Huntamer Park in Woodland Square, Seventh Avenue Southeast and Woodland Square Loop. Bring your chairs and blankets, and find a spot on the lawn for an evening of live music from Beatles’ tribute band BRITISH EXPORT, followed by the family-friendly film “THAT THING YOU DO.” The series continues each Saturday through Aug. 11 with music starting at 7 p.m. and a film at dusk. SATURDAY -- Honoring Leschi: The State Capital Museum will host a limited showing of Chief Leschi’s 1850s canoe paddle in conjunction with the Paddle to Squaxin 2012 canoe journey. The opening day ceremony, HONORING CHIEF LESCHI, includes a traditional welcome, a canoe panel carving demonstration with Phillip Red Eagle, traditional Salish flute music performed by Garry Stroutsos, and basketweaving and storytelling with Harvest Moon. The day’s events are from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 211 S.W. 21st Ave.; the paddle will remain on display through Aug. 4. SATURDAY -- Indie tunes: It’s going to be a day celebrating independent artists of all kinds at the annual OLYMPIA INDEPENDENT MUSIC FESTIVAL on Saturday. In its fourth year, the festival at the Capitol Theater features live performances from artists of all genres from within the Olympia community. There will be an outdoor music stage, beer garden, street vendors, food and crafts from noon to 9 p.m. at the theater, 206 Fifth Ave. S.E., Olympia. Some of the bands featured will include Hollywood Kill Krew, The Fabulous Downey Brothers, Elbow Coulee, Full Moon Radio and Glass Elevator at this all-ages, free event. SUNDAY -- Hot rods and Tow-mater: Music 6000 at 3738 Pacific Ave. S.E., Olympia, will host its second annual CLASSIC HOT ROD SHOW from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The show raises money to provide music lessons, instruments and scholarships for local youth. In addition to hot rods, the show will include live music, a raffle, food, vendors, Pin-Up Girls, trophies, and Tow-Mater from Disney/Pixar's "Cars" movies.
