EUGENE, Ore. – Black Hills Youth Baseball’s 12-year-old all-stars had its postseason run end one victory short of a Cal Ripken World Series berth Saturday afternoon, falling 5-3 to the Western all-stars of Longview in the Cal Ripken Major 70-foot bases regional tournament title game at the Willamette Valley Babe Ruth Complex.

While Black Hills season ends at regionals, Western advances to the Cal Ripken World Series Aug. 11-19 in Aberdeen, Md. The tournament will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.

The regional title game was a rematch of the July 14 Southern Washington Cal Ripken state title game in which Black Hills defeated Western, 8-4. Black Hills cruised through its pool-play games, defeating Evanston, Wyo. (11-0), West Linn, Ore. (10-3), and Tualatin, Ore. (9-7). In the semifinals, the team shut out Meridian, Idaho, 4-0, setting up the state title rematch with Western, which also went 4-0 in its four previous games.

XTREME DIAMOND WORLD SERIES: The Thurston County (TC) Saints 16U team, coached by former Capital High School baseball coach Michael “Whitey” Spencer, is the No. 1 seed and undefeated after five games at the Xtreme Diamond Baseball World Series in San Diego. The Saints have shutout three of their five opponents and have outscored their opponents 33-5. They will play Laces Baseball Academy at 9 a.m. Sunday with a shot at playing for the World Series Major title at 2 p.m.
