Olympia native Brodie Buckland led Australia to a fifth-place finish in the men's pair during Friday's Olympic finals in rowing at the Eton Dorney Rowing Centre outside London.

Buckland, a 2002 Capital High School graduate who became an Australian citizen earlier this year, and his partner James Marburg, cross the finish line in 6 minutes, 29.28. The New Zealand pair of Hamish Bond and Eric Murray won the gold medal in 6:16.25. France and Great Britain finished with the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Buckland began rowing at age 16 with Olympia Area Rowing (OAR). He was one of the first teens in the inaugural youth rowing program at OAR in 2000. Buckland said last month he will be back in the United States for the first time since 2008 when he visits family and attends his 10-year high school reunion in Olympia.
