Volunteer of the Month: Carol Little Reed

Carol Little Reed began her adventures in volunteering in 1999, while she was a busy mom raising three kids. She has volunteered during devastating disasters, including working for the Red Cross in the aftermath of 9/11. She’s found herself in charge of an emergency shelter during a tornado in Joplin. MO, which hit not once, but twice in a short period of time. Eventually becoming a Disaster Action Team Leader, she has assisted at numerous other emergency situations.

Carol says that volunteering has fed her sense of adventure, while making her feel good that she is helping; and it has also put her in touch with interesting people she wouldn’t have met otherwise.

Now retired, she joined RSVP hoping meet new people under calmer circumstances. Her favorite RSVP experience so far has been volunteering at The Family Support Center, where she got to put her former management experience to use, while working at their overnight shelter. Carol urges everyone to volunteer, especially after retirement. “Don’t sit home. There are dozens of things to do. If one doesn’t turn out then try another”, she says.
